What’s the Difference?

  • Direct Thermal Labels

These labels use heat to create an image. When heat from the printhead interacts with the label surface, it activates components that mix and (usually) turn black, creating a clear, sharp image without the need for a ribbon.

  • Thermal Transfer Labels

These use a thermal ribbon. The heat from the printhead releases the ribbon, bonding it to the label surface for a high-quality image that’s long-lasting and resistant to wear.

Both options are designed to work flawlessly with all printer makes and models, including Zebra, Toshiba, Honeywell, Sato, and Citizen, which are available for both small and large label printers.

Thermal Transfer Label Materials

  • Matt White Paper

These labels have a matte finish and are ideal for packaging boxes and pallet labelling—great for when you need functional, reliable labels.

  • Semi-Gloss Paper

These labels are perfect for promotional and quality product labelling and have a sleek and professional look with a medium gloss finish.

  • Polyester (PET)

Highly resistant to heat, water, oil, and chemicals, polyester labels are made for demanding environments. This material is ideal for asset labels, serial labels, and for labelling cosmetics, appliances, and electrical equipment.

  • Polyethene (PE)

Durable and water-, oil-, and chemical-resistant polyethene labels are ideal for curved surfaces like test tubes, vials, and chemical drums.

  • Polypropylene (PP)

Perfect for long-term labelling, polypropylene labels are resistant to water, oil, and chemicals. They’re great for packaging materials and labelling laboratory samples and patient information.

FAQ's

  • What is the difference between direct thermal and thermal transfer labels?

Direct thermal labels use heat from the printer head to create an image on heat-sensitive label material, so they do not need a ribbon. Thermal transfer labels use a ribbon that is heated and bonded to the label surface. This can produce a more durable image for applications where labels face wear or need to remain readable for longer. The right option depends on the product, storage conditions and required label life.

  • Which thermal transfer label material is best for my application?

For everyday box or pallet labels, matt white paper is a practical option. Semi-gloss paper gives a smarter finish for product or promotional labelling. For tougher conditions, Vista Labels offers polyester (PET), which resists heat, water, oil and chemicals, as well as PP and PE options for durable or curved-surface applications. Tell us what the label will be applied to and what it will encounter, and we can recommend a suitable material.

  • Which thermal transfer ribbon do I need?

The ribbon should match both the label material and the conditions the printed label will face. Wax ribbons can suit many paper applications, while resin or wash-proof grades may be better for synthetic labels or demanding environments. Vista Labels supplies compatible ribbons in a range of grades. Share your printer model, label stock and application details and we can help identify an option to test

  • Are your thermal labels compatible with my label printer?

Vista Labels supplies thermal labels for a wide range of printer makes, including Zebra, Toshiba, Honeywell, Sato and Citizen. Compatibility still depends on your exact printer model, label dimensions, core size, sensor position and whether you use direct thermal or thermal transfer. Send us your printer details and current label specification and we can check the format before you order.
